Sandra and Maya agree (reluctantly... eventually) to chaperone their kids' class trip to Washington D. C. While there, they visit Sandra's soon-to-be-ex-husband, the Senator. When one of the Senator's aides turns up dead in his apartment, he's not just the number one suspect, he's the only suspect. But despite his years lying and philandering his way through the best years of Sandra's life, she can tell he's being honest this time when he swears his innocence.

Lee Hollis is one of my favorite cozy mystery authors. Though this is probably my least favorite of Hollis's three series, I still really enjoy it. I also really like it when my cozy characters go on vacation and the books are set somewhere other than their hometown. This book was less about the vacation and more about the mystery and political intrigue of Washington, but it was fun to have a change of scenery. I haven't been to DC in years and it was fun to tour it virtually with Fern and the sexy new coach, visiting the memorials and Ford's Theater.

There's a lot going on in the lives of Maya and Sandra. Sandra is having all kinds of conflicting feelings about her crumbling marriage as she works to get her husband off the hook for murder. Maya has left her recently paroled husband behind at home, hoping he'll find a job and paint her house without destroying it. How will that situation resolve itself? I can't wait to read the next book and find out!

I would highly recommend this series and especially this author to anyone who enjoys reading cozies.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
